Jake’s sculptures draw on traditional thatching techniques (but using hi-tech, marine-grade steel) and emergent behaviour; a system which does not depend on its individual parts, but rather on their relationship to one another; many individual parts coming together to form a complex whole.

This 33-year-old accidental designer is self-taught, having benefitted from the guidance of government bodies like the CDI and VANSA to develop his natural talent. Using very little to create furniture of great value, he is well on his way to becoming a celebrated South African designer.

Engaging with artisan weavers in Southern Africa, as well as extensive desk research, Nkuli develops contemporary designs that simultaneously serve to evolve and promote a rich craft heritage. Her arresting rugs, which are rich in history and tradition, are created from Karakul and Mohair wool.
